Julbo Shield

CGR Rating 4

With the Shield sunglasses, Julbo set out to create a pair of sunglasses with the technical features to cope with high altitude mountaineering, multi-sports and changing conditions, whilst still looking stylish on the street.

Julbo Shield – excellent eye coverage and comfortable nose bridge

Julbo say:

Julbo has produced a stylish frame for cross/mountain bike hoppers to reflect both their spirit of adventure and technical ability. All-terrain and all-protection, Shield will open both your field of vision and your mind to what’s possible: Zebra or Cameleon photochromic REACTIV lenses for perfect vision, and non-slip curved temples with Nose Grip so they stay on your head when things get bumpy! Air Flow ventilation and removable soft-feel side shields guarantee maximum comfort. The sleek rectangular shape ensures style and bold moves go hand-in-hand.

The Shield is what I’d describe as a great pair of multi-activity shades. They are lightweight, give excellent eye coverage and with the removable side shades, block out the maximum amount of bright light, particularly useful on glaciated terrain, snow and at higher altitudes. They also look good, with a modern silhouette and a practical range of lenses for varying light conditions.

Julbo Shield – copes well with the glare of higher altitudes – Mont Blanc summit!

In terms of fit I’d say the Shield is quite big, they fit me well (though like anything, fit can be quite subjective to the individual so try them on) and the rubberised arms and soft nose bridge allowed comfort and security to be achieved without any tweaking.

The package includes a detachable head strap that is useful to stop them being dropped or if you’re taking them on and off a lot. And a compact hard case and soft lens sock is included to protect them as standard.

I’ve used the Shield sunglasses for alpine mountaineering up to 4800m, rock climbing, trail running, cycling and hanging out in town. They really are versatile. They’ve essentially been permanently attached my face or forehead for a whole summer season now and despite pretty full on usage, they’re proving to be quite durable as well.

Julbo Shield – functional and stylish?

I tested the two tone blue and yellow frames with Zebra Reactive lenses which change from Categories 2 to 4 depending on light conditions. This is a fantastic lens with super clear optics, that gives amazing versatility for different conditions and activities. It’s really worth considering a lens like this if you want to use the glasses for lots of different activities and don’t want to buy multiple pairs.

If you’re looking for a stylish, high quality and versatile pair of sunglasses with a superb quality lens then the Julbo Shield should be high on your list. Great for the high mountains, the local bar or even the beach, they look after your eyes and look good too. Perfect!
